On April 23, 2014, museum member David Cole presented us with a photo album made in 1954 to commemorate the opening of two Pan Am service stations in Knox County.Mr. Cole said the album of 10 photos was recently given to him by Shirley "Buck" Treadway, whose father was contractor on the project. These photos are featured in our photo gallery section. One station was located on Old Pineville Road, a few hundred yards south of the railroad tracks' crossing on Cumberland Avenue.  The service station was located near the city's power substation. In the background of these photos is the old Hayes-Cole home place, which was built during the years 1848-1855 by A.E. Pogue. The house was torn down about 1980. The photo at left features Jerry Brooks, left, of Brooks Oil of Middlesboro and new Pan Am manager Sam M. Cole, who grew up in the Hayes-Cole home. The other station was located on North KY 11 at its intersection with old U.S. 25E, also known as Blue Gable Straight, on the old Charlie Patterson property. The station was managed by Lige Messer.
